THE NEW RAILWAY The museum is building a WW1 trench railway using the original 2 ft gauge track layout. We are going around the perimeter and have got about halfway and run out of track!!! We need more track of 25lb weight or up to 40lb. Railway types will understand the jargon.
Our locomotive is a 1944 SIMPEX MOTORAIL powered by a 28hp Dorman diesel. This locomotive is almost the same as the WW1 Simplex Motorails which were petrol engined. We also have a box van and two wagons. We are currently restoring a carriage which will be our troop transport. Trench railways were used to move vast amounts of stores and troops up to the front. Several types of locomotives were used including steam but these did have a tendancy to attract enemy artillery fire!! |
