You might think it unusual to have a Visitor Centre for a Creamery at the museum, but there is a good reason for it!

In 1950 a cheese factory was set up by Cow & Gate in the former WAAF quarters at this location. The site has expanded considerably and is now operated by Dairy Crest which produces 800-1000 tons of cheese per week.

Visitors to the museum often used to ask if they were allowed to visit the cheese factory next door, but the answer from Dairy Crest was always “No” for Health & Safety and Hygiene reasons. The solution was to build a Visitor Centre with display boards and an interesting film which provides answers to most of the questions that were likely to be asked. For security reasons the centre could not be located on their own premises, but as the museum is adjacent we were approached and readily agreed.

Finally, visitors also asked if they were able to buy Davidstow cheese direct from the factory. Again the answer had to be “No” but in response to demand Davidstow cheese is now stocked in the Guardroom at the museum.
