Although this looks like it could have
been one of the original buildings from the 1940s it was
actually built after WW2 for agricultural purposes. Found
in a semi-derelict condition it has been restored to be a
major display area. The building was called “Sea Power”
when it first came into use as this was then the only
building dedicated solely to the Royal Navy. There are now
four RN buildings at the museum and although this building
still contains a large amount of material related to the
Royal Navy there are other items there as well. One of the
main reasons for this is that it is one of only two
buildings that have large entrance doors which can allow
larger items to be displayed under cover. As well as photographs and artefacts
relating to the Royal Navy this building also houses our
German display, including a very impressive deck-gun from
a WW1 U-Boat. Considering its size, visitors are usually
amazed when they read that this gun was brought up in the
fishing nets of a Cornish trawler. Awaiting restoration in this building is a
WW2 barrage-balloon winch, although unfortunately we do
not have an actual balloon to go with it!
