The Royal Navy and Royal Naval Air Service are
extensively covered in this building with artefacts, models,
photographs and literature on display and a video to watch.
The RNAS was established in 1909 and grew
rapidly in the 5 years leading up to the commencement of WW1 in
1914. The display relates to the many RNAS stations that were
located on the North coast of Cornwall and also at Mullion on the
Lizard. During the war they operated a variety of airships,
land-based airplanes and seaplanes against enemy ships and
submarines. The photos and history of these early RNAS bases
(their airships in particular) make fascinating reading.
During WW2 the RNAS had a School of Naval
Gunnery at St Merryn (near Padstow) and an Air Firing Range at
RNAS Treligga. The video showing in this building is about RNAS
Treligga which was the only RN station in the UK staffed entirely
by women.
The large number of RN artefacts can be seen
within two main display areas and several display cabinets. One of
the most unusual is a post-war Corgi motorcycle that was used as a
means of transport on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. This
small motorcycle was a development of the original ‘Welbike’
that had been produced during WW2 for the Parachute Regiment.
