HMS Raleigh is a shore
establishment at Torpoint in SE Cornwall where all new entrants to
the Royal Navy receive their basic training. In recent years this
function has been extended and recruits from various foreign
navies also receive some of their training there.
There is an extensive range of artefacts,
documents and photographs on display – not only the shore
establishment but also the six warships that bore this name. The
first of these was in 1778 and the final one in 1922.
Of particular interest are the very large
photographs from the early 1900s depicting life aboard ships that
at that time were mostly coal-fired.
Other fascinating exhibits in this building
include both a ship’s binnacle and a cat o’ nine tails,
thelatter being a rather unpleasant form of punishment.
Elsewhere within the building there is a small
display relating to the QARNNS (Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval
Nursing Service). This display includes a brief history of the
QARNNS, photographs and cape & hat badges.
